The best AI candidate screening tools in 2026

Screening is where hiring actually breaks. Here's what the leading platforms do well, where each falls down, and how to work out which one fits the way you hire.

i Talvin makes one of the tools on this list. We've tried to write the comparison we wanted when we were choosing tools ourselves, including where competitors are the better answer.

Four questions that decide it

Answer these before you sit through a demo. Each one eliminates at least two of the six.

01

Does the price survive your volume?

Per-seat pricing punishes agencies. Per-candidate pricing punishes high-volume employers. Work out the cost of your actual monthly volume before you get attached to a product.

Screens per month
100 500 2,000
screens / month

Per seat · 5 recruiters

02

How much of your funnel is non-native English?

Speech recognition trained mostly on North American English degrades on other accents, and it fails invisibly — the transcript looks plausible and the score looks reasonable while a strong candidate is quietly ranked lower. Test it with your own candidates, not a demo script.

"I handled the escalation myself and [inaudible] the account, so the client stayed."
Score returned 71plausible, and wrong
03

Can you audit a score?

Ask any vendor to show you why a specific candidate was ranked where they were. If the answer is a number without a transcript and reasoning, you cannot defend the decision to a hiring manager — and you certainly cannot defend it to a regulator.

04

What are you actually trying to learn?

If you need to know whether someone can write working code, a skills test tells you more than any interview. If you need to know how they handle an angry customer, a test tells you almost nothing. Most tools are good at one and poor at the other — that mismatch is the most common reason teams replace a platform within a year.

The tools

Identical structure per entry — a comparison, not six pitches
T

Talvin

Agentic voice interviews with role simulation. Built for depth of assessment rather than breadth of workflow automation.

Pricing $175/mo
Published · billed by interview time, not seats
Best for
Volume hiring for roles where judgment and communication decide performance, and teams hiring across several language markets.
Strengths

Live two-way voice interviews where follow-up questions are generated from the candidate's actual answer, with probing depth configurable per question.

Job Tryouts put candidates into a role simulation against an AI persona that reacts to them — no other platform on this list offers an equivalent.

Scoring returns with a full transcript and reasoning, so decisions can be audited. Video identity check, activity monitoring and one-time links are built in.

Limitations

Fewer native ATS integrations than HireVue or Ribbon.

Smaller company than the enterprise incumbents, which matters if your procurement process weights vendor size.

Job Tryouts are newer than the core interview product.

H

HireVue

The enterprise incumbent, now shipping two-way voice alongside its video and assessment products.

Pricing Sales-gated
Best for
Large enterprises with formal procurement, especially where IO-psychology validation is required to sign off a hiring process.
Strengths

The deepest validation credentials in the category — assessments built and audited by industrial-organisational psychologists, which matters in regulated hiring and wherever legal review gates adoption.

Enormous scale and reference base: 60%+ of the Fortune 100, 180M+ assessments.

Shipped its AI Interviewer in June 2026 — a genuine two-way conversational product scored against validated rubrics. This is no longer a video-only vendor.

Limitations

Enterprise procurement measured in weeks rather than days, and no published pricing.

Reliability is the most common complaint in its public reviews.

Publishes no content on multilingual or accent-specific hiring, which is a gap if your pipeline is largely non-native English. No job-simulation product.

16% of G2 reviews we analysed mention outages or call glitches
M

HeyMilo

A fast-growing multi-agent recruiting platform positioned around high-volume hiring.

Pricing Sales-gated
Best for
US enterprises and staffing firms wanting several recruiting agents on one platform, with broad language coverage.
Strengths

Well funded and moving quickly — $6M raised in June 2026 and three new agents shipped the same quarter, covering candidate rediscovery, scenario assessment and note-taking.

50+ languages and dialects, with a strong enterprise reference base including Randstad and WilsonHCG.

4.83 across 24 G2 reviews, no critical ratings — a genuinely good record
Limitations

Pricing is sales-gated — you cannot find out what it costs without a call.

No job-simulation equivalent.

Built primarily for the US market; its multilingual and offshore coverage is recent and content-led rather than structural. The review profile, while strong, only begins in May 2025.

R

Ribbon AI

Voice interviews plus multi-channel candidate communication, repositioned around ATS orchestration.

Pricing $499/mo
Best for
US and Canadian teams wanting screening tightly wired into an existing ATS, with email and SMS in the same workflow.
Strengths

The best ATS integration story in this set — MCP-based connections shipped through spring 2026.

Workday Greenhouse Lever Ashby SmartRecruiters Bullhorn

Publishes pricing openly at $499/month, which is rarer than it should be here. Proven at volume: 1M+ interviews across 400+ companies.

Limitations

Focused on the US and Canada, with no meaningful localisation for other markets.

No job-simulation product.

Entry price is roughly three times Talvin's, which matters for smaller teams and agencies.

V

Vervoe

Skills-based assessment and proctoring. A different category that overlaps at the evaluation stage.

Pricing Published
Best for
Roles where the job produces a testable artefact — code, spreadsheets, written work, design — and you want objective grading.
Strengths

Genuinely good at hard-skill testing, with automated grading and proctoring.

A clear, defensible philosophy: hire on demonstrated merit rather than background. Established with SMB buyers and straightforward to adopt self-serve.

Limitations

Text and video assessments only — no conversational AI, so it cannot evaluate spoken communication or situational judgment.

Support quality is the dominant theme in its public reviews, appearing in around a quarter of those we analysed, and price increases are a recurring complaint.

"We're still finding people use AI to answer the questions, particularly text based questions."
G2 reviewer, August 2026
I

Interviewer.AI

Asynchronous one-way video interviews with AI scoring.

Pricing ~$53/mo
Best for
Budget-constrained teams that specifically want one-way video and do not need conversational depth.
Strengths

The cheapest option in this set by a distance, from roughly $53–67/month on annual plans.

Established in video interviewing, and Singapore-headquartered, which gives it genuine regional presence.

Limitations

Still a one-way video product — candidates record answers to fixed questions with no follow-up, under a hard 10-minute cap.

Scoring is based partly on facial expression and tone, and cannot be audited or exported. No white-labelling, so candidates see the vendor's branding throughout.

Multiple public reviews on Capterra and Trustpilot document transcription problems for non-native English speakers — a serious constraint for multilingual pipelines.

Honestly, where each one wins

Five of these six are the right answer for someone. Here is the case for each, including the ones that beat us.

HChoose HireVue

If you are a large enterprise and your legal or people-analytics team needs assessment validation they can point to in a review. Nobody else has that depth of IO-psychology work behind them — if that is the requirement, it is not a close call.

RChoose Ribbon

If your hiring runs through a US ATS and you want screening, email and SMS orchestrated in one place. Their integration breadth is ahead of ours.

VChoose Vervoe

If the job produces a testable artefact and you want objective grading of it. A skills test beats an interview for that — including ours.

IChoose Interviewer.AI

If you specifically want one-way video at the lowest possible price and your candidates are predominantly native English speakers.

MChoose HeyMilo

If you want several recruiting agents on one US-centric platform and language breadth matters more to you than assessment depth.

TChoose Talvin

If you need to know how someone will actually handle the work — a difficult customer, a technical challenge, a conversation that goes sideways — and if a meaningful share of your candidates are not native English speakers.

FAQ

Questions buyers actually ask

Five of them. If yours isn't here, ask us on a call — we will tell you when a competitor is the better fit.

What is an AI screening tool? +

Software that automates the first stage of evaluating job applicants — the point where a large pool has to become a short list. Tools in this category do that in different ways: some conduct spoken interviews, some run one-way video, some administer skills tests, some manage scheduling and messaging around a human screen.

The common promise is throughput: assessing every applicant rather than the first fifty, without adding recruiters. The meaningful differences are in what is actually being measured, whether the assessment adapts to the candidate, and whether you can audit the result.

Do AI screening tools actually save time? +

Yes, and it is the least interesting thing they do. The more significant change is coverage. In a manual process, a team receiving four hundred applications screens maybe sixty and the rest are rejected on a CV skim or never contacted at all.

Automated screening means everyone gets assessed, which changes who reaches your shortlist rather than just how fast they get there. The saving is real too — recruiters spend somewhere between six and nine hours on admin per hire before evaluation even begins.

400 applicationswho gets assessed
Manual · 60 of 400
Automated · 400 of 400
Are AI screening tools fair? +

More consistent than human screening, which is not the same as unbiased. Structured, identical assessment removes the drift that creeps into a human process across a long day, and it removes some well-documented influences like name and appearance.

But no AI system is automatically fair, and any vendor claiming otherwise is overselling. What makes an approach defensible is whether the criteria are genuinely role-relevant, whether scoring can be audited, and whether a human stays accountable for the decision. Ask about all three.

How much do they cost? +

Published entry prices in this set range from roughly $53 a month to $499. Two of the six do not publish pricing at all and require a sales conversation.

The number that matters is cost at your volume, not the entry price. Per-seat pricing gets expensive for agencies with several recruiters on a desk; per-candidate pricing gets expensive for high-volume employers. Model your actual monthly volume before comparing headline figures.

How do I evaluate these properly? +

Run one live role through two tools in parallel and compare the shortlists against what your team would have produced manually. It takes a week and tells you more than any demo.

Two things to test specifically: give each tool candidates from your actual pipeline rather than the vendor's demo script, particularly if your candidates are not native English speakers; and ask each vendor to explain why one specific candidate ranked above another.

If the depth-of-assessment problem is the one you have, the fastest way to test it is to run one live role through Talvin alongside your current process and compare the shortlists.
